I am offering music classes for families who are looking for Fine Arts instruction in an “academic” class rather than a performing ensemble. This can provide students an opportunity to learn about music without the pressures of performance. It can also enhance the experience of students who are involved in performing ensembles.
Online Virtual Class Options
General Music (Elementary Grade Level Students)
This class will teach students the basics of music reading and ear training, introduce them to various styles of music (historical and other cultures), introduce a variety of instruments (concert and folk), and acquaint the students with high-quality music from various composers in many styles. The material will be presented in the form of a quest, where the student advances toward the final goal by completing units and earning points that move them along the path. There will be written work that can easily be completed and either graded by the parents (keys will be provided) or emailed to me for grading. Classes will be once a week via Zoom, so students will need to be able to access the class by computer, iPad, or smartphone. Younger students will need to have some reading proficiency, so this is probably not a good option for Kindergarten or 1st grade students.
Music Theory (Secondary Grade Level Students)
This class will teach students the fundamentals of music reading and ear training, basic elements of music (pitch, melody, harmony, rhythm), melodic and chord structures, scales, musical form and structure, and music analysis. Prior experience in reading music will be helpful but not necessary. There will be considerable written work which can be grade by parents (keys will be provided) or emailed to me for grading. This class will be a real asset to students who plan on pursuing music professionally or as active amateur participants. Classes will be once a week via Zoom, so students will need to be able to access the class by computer, iPad, or smartphone.
Music History/Appreciation (Secondary Grade Level Students)
This class will introduce students to high quality music from many times and cultures, placing everything in its historical, geographic, and cultural context. Students will be enabled to become intelligent listeners by learning aural analysis principles that apply to music of all styles and times. There will be some written work which can be graded by parents (keys will be provided) or emailed to me for grading. There will also be a few “class presentations” where each student will prepare a short oral presentation to be shared with the class. Classes will be once a week via Zoom, so students will need to be able to access the class by computer, iPad, or smartphone.
Each class is designed to be a semester course of study, complete in itself. Since the virtual classes are online via Zoom, there is neither a minimum nor a maximum number of participants. Classes will be on Thursday mornings at 9:00 (Music History/Appreciation), 10:00 (General Music), and 11:00 (Music Theory). All classes will be virtual via Zoom, and emails will be sent with the links to the various class sessions.
The cost of the classes is as follows:
$75 per semester per first student in a family
$65 per semester per student in a family after the first full charge (sibling discount)
$65 per semester for an older student who is taking both available classes, after paying full charge for the first class.
I will be setting up a PayPal account for easy online payment.
Parents are responsible for printing assignments from the PDF files that will be provided.
I plan on having the first classes on Thursday, September 17, so prompt enrollment is needed. Please help spread the word about these classes.
